World Hepatitis Day
July 28th is World Hepatitis Day. And while this global campaign is a massive, much-needed spotlight on viral hepatitis, it’s also the perfect reminder to check in on the quiet powerhouse of our metabolism: the liver. We often call the liver the “silent organ” because it can be struggling long before a standard blood test shows any red flags.Don’t wait for severe issues like cirrhosis to develop, instead, hunt for the early, subtle whispers of liver dysfunction and metabolic imbalances so we can catch things early.
How Fatty Liver Develops
The Evolution of NAFLD vs. MAFLDOne in three of Australians have a fatty liver, typically called Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). The medical community are now focusing on metabolic criteria that reveal the true burden on the liver, hence, NAFLD is now shifted to Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) which is closed related to Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD)By focusing on inclusive rather than just the exclusion of alcohol, recent clinical data reveals that the true burden is substantially higher than previously estimated.MAFLD is a metabolic diagnosis thatrecognizes that fatty liver is directly driven by systemic issues: insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, obesity, type 2 diabetes, or metabolic risk factors.
Is Detox Fact or Fiction?
When you think of a “detox,” you picture juices or restrictive diets.
Liver detoxification is in fact, a highly sophisticated, constant biochemical process divided into three main phases that require robust nutritional support to run smoothly.Phase I (Transformation): Toxins are broken down via the Cytochrome P450 enzyme family. This phase actually creates highly reactive free radicals that are often more toxic than the original substance.Phase II (Conjugation): The liver neutralizes these reactive intermediates by attaching specific molecules like amino acids, glutathione, or sulphur to make them water-soluble, allowing them to be safely eliminated via the kidneys or bile.Phase III (Elimination): Specialized transport proteins pump the water-soluble toxins neutralized in Phase 2 out of the liver cells and into the bile or blood to be permanently excreted through the stool and urine. The Functional Danger: If your Phase I pathway is over-stimulated (by alcohol, medications, or environmental toxins) but your Phase II pathway lacks the necessary raw materials, such as targeted amino acids (glycine, taurine, cysteine) and antioxidants, those toxic intermediates build up, driving tissue damage and metabolic sluggishness.
Check Your Liver: A Quick Self-Assessment

Because the liver doesn’t have pain receptors, dysfunction rarely presents with obvious signs early on. Take a moment to go through this brief checklist:Do you experience persistent fatigue or “brain fog”?Do you struggle with gut bloating, sluggish digestion, or an inability to tolerate fatty foods?Have you noticed increased chemical sensitivities (e.g., reacting strongly to perfumes, smoke, or caffeine)? Are you dealing with stubborn weight gain, particularly around the belly?Do you experience waking up routinely around 3:00 AM?Have routine blood tests shown blood sugar levels or lipid profiles creeping upward? If you checked two or more of these boxes, your liver may be signaling that its detoxification pathways and metabolic workload are out of balance.
Take Action Now
This World Hepatitis Day, let’s look beyond the surface. Supporting your liver isn’t about generic fixes; it’s about evaluating functional pathology markers, optimizing cellular metabolism, and providing the precise nutritional building blocks your pathways need to thrive.
