Indigestion or dyspepsia causes pain and discomfort in the upper belly and comes with belching, burping, bloating, heartburn, nausea, or vomiting.
Why is it Important?
Indigestion affects 1 in 4 people. It is no wonder that the use of Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) has increased by 1300% over the last 10 years and is considered to be among the top 10 prescribed drugs in Australia since the 2000s.
Indigestion, also called dyspepsia describes a group of gastrointestinal symptoms that may be associated with acid reflux, heartburn or more complex gut conditions.
Indigestion often comes with a host of other upper gastrointestinal condition which then affects the passage into the intestines.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), sometimes called acid reflux, happens when acid in your stomach flows back into your oesophagus and causes heartburn.
Gastritis happens when the lining of your stomach is irritated. Common causes of gastritis include Helicobacter pylori infection, damage to the gastric mucosa caused by, e.g., nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, alcohol, stress, or an autoimmune conditions like Crohn’s disease or sarcoidosis.
