Alchemy of Health Webinar Series – Oral Microbiome for Metabolic Health
The health of the oral microbiome determines the health of your body.
Why is it important?
We know how important the gut microbiome is, but what about the oral microbiome? The oral microbiome is a community of microorganisms, predominantly bacteria, found within the mouth. After the gut, the microbiome of the mouth is the second most colonised part of the body. Poor oral health leads to infected gums or gingivitis, tooth decay, plaque development, receding gums, bad breath or oral thrush.
The health of the mouth influences every organ in the body and has been shown to be associated to IBD, Alzheimer’s Disease, cardiovascular health and diabetes. Consequences of an unhealthy oral microbiome can also be linked to sinusitis, chest infections or headaches. The right kind of bacteria can inhibit oral thrush, or bacterial infections like swollen or sore bleeding gums.
Dental decay has existed predominantly since the introduction of refined sugars and consumption of types of foods all year-round which results in proliferation of certain microbes and subsequent infections.
