Glutamine, the primary brain fuel, is employed to rid the brain of excess ammonia, a poisonous natural chemical via the urea cycle. Glutamine, also known as “brain food” has shown promise in the treatment of depression. Glutamine is used to assist in overcoming symptoms associated with jet lag, exam pressure, difficulty in concentration, and lack of enthusiasm.

Methionine serves as the primary precursor to S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), the body’s universal methyl donor required for the synthesis and metabolism of serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin. By supporting the methylation of neurotransmitters and phospholipids, it maintains membrane fluidity and receptor sensitivity across the synaptic cleft.

Tyrosine serves as the direct amino acid precursor to L-DOPA, which is subsequently converted into dopamine to support motivation, executive function, and reward pathways. During periods of acute stress, it is sequestered to synthesize noradrenaline and adrenaline, helping to prevent the depletion of cognitive resources and maintaining mental focus. Tyrosine appears to prevent the behavioral depression and hypothalamic Noradrenaline depletion observed following an acute stress and to suppress the rise in plasma cortisol.

Phenylalanine converts to the neurotransmitter tyrosine and to the adrenal catecholamine, noradrenaline (NA), both of which influence mood and behavior.
Phenylalanine is able to prevent the breakdown of endorphins (morphine-like substances produced by the adrenal glands, the body’s natural pain killers.

The amino acids, Tyrosine, Methionine and Phenylalanine, are critical at this point, as without these amino acids, your brain would not be able to produce all the adrenalin it needs to help you respond to stress.

Lysine acts as a partial antagonist to 5 HT4 receptors, which helps to regulate the release of serotonin and reduce manifestations of pathological anxiety. It also on GABA-A receptors, mimicking the inhibitory effects of GABA to help calm overstimulated neurological pathways.

Inositol acts as a vital secondary messenger that facilitates the binding of serotonin and dopamine to their receptors. It enhances receptor sensitivity, making it effective in signaling pathways involved in mood regulation and panic response.

L-Theanine increases levels of GABA, serotonin, and dopamine while simultaneously inhibiting the excitability of glutamate. It specifically promotes alpha brain wave activity, fostering a state of “alert relaxation” and reducing the impact of the stress hormone cortisol.

Glycine, derived from Serine and Threonine, is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the spinal cord and brainstem to regulate motor and sensory signals. It also acts as a co-agonist at NMDA receptors, facilitating excitatory glutamatergic transmission required for learning and memory.
